A vault located in the heart of The Commonwealth is called Vault 81. It is situated along the railroad tracks just west of Chestnut Hillock Reservoir and south of Oberland Station.
In this area, there are 2 Magazines, 1 Bobblehead, and 1 Companion.
Vault 81 Layout
You will find a little radio comlink that can be used to open Vault 81 as you approach it in the cave. You can start a chat with Officer Edwards and the Overseer through the comlink by opening up your Pip-Boy at the entrance.
In the chat, you can highlight your status as a fellow Vault Dweller to persuade the Overseer to open the door if you have a high enough Charisma stat.
The Overseer, Officer Edwards, and numerous other Vault Dwellers can be seen wandering around after you’re inside.
There are trash-filled tables that you can steal from, but doing so will have the Dwellers attack you. A route leading to Officer Edwards’ office and an elevator that descends further into the vault may be found in the back corridor.
There are additional Vault Dwellers in the lower level of the Vault, including Austin, who will give you a tour for 5 CAPS (you can be convinced to do it for free).
The Overseer’s room is down the corridor, and it features a terminal you can hack to see several types of information. You can steal a number of things, but you do so at your own risk.
Many NPCs can be found downstairs in the floor’s main hall, along with various vendors selling food and healing supplies.
Visit Dr. Penske’s lab across from Horatio’s Barber on the south side of the floor to change your hairdo. You can harvest a variety of food things from Penske’s lab, such as maize and potatoes.
A terminal with study materials about Penske’s work is also there.
The pathway to Katy’s classroom and residential quarters is located on a portion of the ground floor.
Each room has numerous objects that can be stolen, including junk, health, and ammunition, although doing so will draw the attention of the floor’s security to your location.
Speaking with Katy will start a brief quest that allows you to ask the Vault kids questions about the Commonwealth.
A ramp leading to the lowest Residential area rooms and Dr. Forsythe’s lab is located down the hallway in this location.

By speaking with Rachel in the lab, you can heal yourself. On Rachel’s workstation, there is a terminal with various medical data.
Stimpacks and RadAway, among other recovery products, are available on the lab tables for theft.

Secret Vault 81

You’ll learn that a child was bitten by a mole rat carrying a fatal disease after finishing the side quest Here Kitty Kitty.
Through this, you’ll discover a secret entrance to a new vault that Vault-Tec scientists created to watch over Vault 81 so they could research the outcomes of illnesses and possible treatments created using mole rats.
The majority of the scientists in the hidden vault were about to release pathogens when the mole rats escaped and overpowered the staff, encasing them for almost two centuries alongside their counterparts. Unbeknownst to the current residents of Vault 81.
Curie, a customized Handy robot, was the only survivor. She continued to work on developing treatments based on the pathogens raised in the mole rats but was unable to leave her lab.
